After School Clubs

SHINE facilitates after school clubs to youth ages six through twelve, once a week, year-round. The clubs are offered at four community centers located in Housing Authority City of Yuma's (HACY) largest apartment complexes. Club membership is free and currently limited to HACY residents.

After school activities include arts and crafts, Science-Technology-Engineering-Math (STEM) projects, sports, field trips, and character education. The clubs' schedules cover typically unsupervised after school hours and offer a safe space where children can have fun, have snacks, and learn core values.

Additionally, the club promotes citizenship and community responsibility through a special partnership with Casa Sierra Vista Apartments (CSV). CSV is an elderly and disabled apartment complex, managed by HACY. SHINE's unique intergenerational program brings two generations together through arts and crafts, gardening, and mentorship opportunities once a month. Intergenerational programming is statistically proven to decrease criminal activity, including drug abuse, in children, and significantly decreases depression, loneliness, and illness in elderly adults.

SHINE is also a proud partner of Northern Arizona University's Foster Grandparent Program. The Grandparent Program gives elderly volunteers a paid opportunity to share their wisdom, experience, energy, and love with Yuma's youth. Mr. and Mrs. Marques, SHINE grandparents, are always excited to greet club members with a smile and, just like any grandparent, with a candy or two!
